UK Student Visa - Application Process

We Guide You Through Every Stage of Your UK Student Visa Application

From your first eligibility check to collecting your BRP in the UK - Vortex Ease is with you at every step.

Overview of the Application Process

Applying for a UK Student Visa can feel overwhelming - but when you know exactly what is expected at each stage, it becomes a manageable and logical process. Below is a step-by-step guide to how the UK Student Visa application works, and how Vortex Ease supports you throughout. We cover every stage from CAS receipt to your arrival in the UK.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

1

Receive Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)

A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a unique 14-digit reference number issued by your university or college once you have met all the conditions of your offer. Your CAS contains important details: the course name and start date, the course duration, your personal details as held by the institution, the tuition fee amount, and any funds already paid. You cannot apply for a UK Student Visa without a valid CAS. Your institution will issue it directly to you - typically around 6 to 10 weeks before your course start date, though timescales vary. Vortex Ease will help you understand what your CAS contains and advise you on the next step once you receive it.

2

Prepare Your Documents

Once you have your CAS, the next step is to gather all required documents before completing your application. Your document checklist will typically include your valid passport, bank statements showing sufficient funds for the required period, your English language test certificate, your university offer letter, and any other documents relevant to your individual circumstances. Vortex Ease provides every client with a personalised document checklist and conducts a thorough review of your documents before submission - checking for common errors such as insufficient fund holding periods, expired test certificates, or inconsistencies in name spelling across documents.

Complete the Online Application (UK Visas & Immigration)

The UK Student Visa application is submitted online through the UKVI website. You will need to create an account, complete the Student Visa application form, enter your CAS reference number, provide your personal and travel history details, and pay the application fee. Vortex Ease guides you through each section of the form, helping you answer accurately and avoid common mistakes. We review the completed form with you before final submission.

4

Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

As part of the online application process, you will be required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). This surcharge grants you access to the National Health Service (NHS) during your stay in the UK. The IHS is calculated based on the length of your visa and must be paid before you can complete your application. The current IHS rate for students is set by the UK government and is subject to change - Vortex Ease will advise you of the applicable amount at the time of your application. You will receive an IHS reference number upon payment, which is required to complete your visa form.

5

Attend Biometric Appointment (UKVCAS)

After submitting your online application, you will need to book an appointment at a UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) centre to provide your biometric information - fingerprints and a digital photograph. You will book this appointment through the UKVCAS website after receiving an invitation email. Centres offer both standard and enhanced (premium) appointment options. You must bring your passport and any physical documents you stated you would present at your appointment. Vortex Ease advises you on which appointment type is appropriate for your timeline and exactly what to bring on the day.

6

Await Decision & Travel to the UK

After your biometric appointment, UKVI will process your application. If approved, you will receive a vignette (entry clearance sticker) in your passport, which allows you to enter the UK within the specified travel window. Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) - your formal permission to be in the UK - will be issued separately. You will typically need to collect it from a designated Post Office within 10 days of arriving in the UK or by the date printed on your vignette, whichever is sooner. Vortex Ease will advise you on your travel window, BRP collection, and what to do upon arrival at your institution.

General Timeline Guidance

You can submit your UK Student Visa application up to 6 months before your course start date if you are applying from outside the UK. If you are applying from within the UK (switching or extending), you must apply before your current visa expires. Standard processing times for applications from outside the UK are typically around 3 weeks, though this is not guaranteed and can vary significantly during peak periods. Priority and super-priority processing services are often available at additional cost and may reduce the decision time to 5 working days or 1 working day respectively. We recommend applying as early as possible once your CAS has been issued and documents are ready.

Note: Processing times and application windows are subject to change. Always refer to the official UKVI website or contact us for the most current guidance.
